Each month in 2005, ARS will be introducing its Board members and Associates. This month, we say farewell to outgoing Chair Christine Chadwick, who has served as ARS Chair for two years, and is Executive Director of FOCUS St. Louis. We also introduce Frank Beal, Executive Director of Chicago Metropolis 2020.
Christine A. Chadwick is Executive Director of FOCUS St. Louis. She was named the first Executive Director of the organization following the merger between Leadership Center of Greater St. Louis and Confluence St. Louis in November of 1996. In addition to serving as Executive Director, she also directs the Leadership St. Louis and Experience St. Louis programs.
Chris is the project manager on many customized services offered by FOCUS. Previous clients include Monsanto, Pharmacia, Commerce Bank, Pfizer, Jefferson College, Thompson Coburn and others.
From January, 1992-1996, she had her own company, CALAB Consulting, specializing in Nonprofit Management, Long Range/Strategic Planning and Workforce Diversity. She is an outstanding stand-up trainer who creates excitement, involvement and commitment among participants and is often called upon to facilitate sessions for clients, participate in panel discussions, and give keynote speeches.
Chris has more than 125 cumulative years of experience on over 25 boards of community organizations, currently serving on the following 6 St. Louis Community and National Boards:
- United Way of Greater St. Louis, Board of Directors
- National Conference for Community and Justice, Board of Directors
- Urban League of Metropolitan St. Loui
- Non-Profit Services Consortium
- Missouri Women's Forum
Chris also serves on 12 additional boards in an advisory capacity and is an active member of numerous organizations. She served as President of the Girl Scouts of Greater St. Louis from 1996-98, the last President of The Leadership Center from 1995-96 before the organization merged with Confluence St. Louis, President of the Saint Louis Zoo Friends Association from 1990-1992, President of the Junior League of St. Louis from 1988-90 and President of the Saint Louis Crisis Nursey from 1986-88 (she was a founder of this agency).
Chris has received numerous honors and awards which include being recognized as a 1991 "Women of Achievement" for Volunteerism, the Spirit of Philanthropy Award from the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, and the YWCA Leader Award for Community Service, and the National Conference for Community and Justice Outstanding Volunteer Service Award.
Chris is a graduate of the Women in Leadership Program, the Leadership St. Louis Program, the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C., the Dismantling Racism Institute and was in the inaugural class of Greater Missouri: Focus on Leadership Program.

Frank H. Beal is Executive Director of Chicago Metropolis 2020. Beal previously served as president of Ryerson International Inc., an operating unit of the former Inland Steel Industries. Beal had worked at Inland Steel Industries since 1981 serving in many different capacities. Previously, he was president and chief executive officer of Ryerson/West, a metals distribution company owned by Inland Steel Industries. He also was general manager of corporate planning and development for Inland Steel Industries; general manager of purchasing for Inland Steel Company; and COO and general manager of raw materials for Inland Steel Coal Company.
Prior to joining Inland Steel Industries, Beal was director of the Illinois Department of Energy and Natural Resources. He also was a special assistant for energy and environmental affairs for Governor James Thompson. Previously, under Governor Richard Ogilvie, Beal served as the state's first deputy director of the Institute for Environmental Quality, which conducts research on energy, natural resources and environmental issues for the state.
As a member of the American Planning Association, he has edited and published several books, articles and research reports on urban affairs and land use planning as well as given numerous speeches nationally on those topics.
Beal graduated from the University of Illinois with a master's degree in urban planning in 1965. He also received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Antioch College.
Chicago Metropolis 2020 is a business-backed civic organization created in 1999 by The Commercial Club of Chicago to promote healthy regional growth. Chicago Metropolis 2020's unifying vision is that the region's 272 municipalities (and some 1,200 units of local government) must make the kinds of informed choices that will make the region attractive and economically competitive 10, 50, and 100 years from now.
