ARS Releases New Monographs: Livable Communities, Regional Business Civic Organizations Highlighted

At the recent National Forum on Regional Stewardship in Salt Lake City, the Alliance for Regional Stewardship released two new monographs. These are the eight and ninth issues in the ARS monograph series.

Toward a Vision of the Livable Community

A major element of the ARS agenda is the promotion of communities that are affordable, mixed-use, high-amenity, compact, inclusive, and sustainable. This vision includes access to public transportation, both to enhance mobility and control air pollution, as well as locating housing near major employment centers. Another important element of livability is the incorporation of open space for aesthetic enjoyment, relaxation and physical exercise. To highlight these important community design concepts and values, this new monograph makes a case for smart growth based on 50 years of living with the consequences of sprawl and the hopeful experiences of communities that have put the well-being of people first.

This monograph can be found on the ARS website at regionalstewardship.org/Documents/Monograph8.pdf.

Regional Business Civic Organizations: Creating New Agendas for Metropolitan Competitiveness

Regional business civic organizations (RBCOs) often are the private sector partners in multi-sector regional collaboration. Their primary work is to promote the competitiveness of the metropolitan areas in which they are located by integrating and addressing the issues that undermine regional economies, such as housing affordability, workforce preparation, mobility, socio-economic equity, public safety, and the status of cultural amenities. Consequently, they are regional stewards, in that they work at the creative intersection of the inter-related issues of economic development, social equity, community livability, and participatory governance by leading initiatives and building partnerships with other sectors and organizations.

Based on research supported by the Ford Foundation and the Metropolitan Leadership Network, ARS has produced this new monograph, which focuses on an emerging typology of business organizations that reach out across boundaries of sector and jurisdiction to address challenges and solve problems that threaten the long-term viability and global competitiveness of their regions.

ARS will also be releasing a third monograph before the end of the year. Regional Indicators: Telling Stories, Measuring Trends, Inspiring Action will highlight common indicators among regional indicator projects, the purpose and process behind those projects, and lessons learned from a selection of regions.
