Great Expectations
The Pennsylvania Economy League's Campaign for Community Competitiveness
(March 2004)

For nearly 100 years the Pennsylvania Economy League (PEL) has provided leaders in Southeastern Pennsylvania with valuable information and insight on the biggest challenges facing the citizens, governments, and businesses of the region. In recent years, PEL has moved from serving as a civic order taker-responding to research requests from civic and government organizations-to a civic agenda setter, stepping forward on tough economic issues and pushing for new ways of thinking about how the region can take full advantage of economic assets like its cultural institutions and colleges and universities. PEL has also expanded on its traditional role by providing invaluable information for the media and voters during important regional and state elections.

As PEL continues this transformation, its board took upon itself the challenge of developing a set of key priorities and activities that it believes PEL should pursue through the end of this decade. This document-the result of a nearly year-long engagement of PEL's board of directors-articulates a set of key priorities and activities that PEL will pursue through the end of this decade.

This four point agenda will be the focus of PEL's communications efforts, its research and development projects and its leadership efforts. Through it, PEL will work to:

  • Improve the region's business climate
  • Improve workforce quality and connections
  • Enhance the quality of life in the region's core communities
  • Take on a big challenge as a region.
