John Gardner once said, The American Experiment is still in the laboratory. And there could be no nobler task for our generation than to move that great effort along. Drawing on the experiences of many supporters of the Alliance for Regional Stewardship, Civic Revolutionaries: Igniting the Passion for Change in Americas Communities shows how regional stewards across the country are igniting the passion for change and thereby making their contribution to the continuing American Experiment.
By their very nature, the book argues, revolutionary leaders help their communities reconcile the competing values on which the United States was founded: individualism and community; trust and accountability; economy and society. Like the founders, todays civic revolutionaries are extraordinary stewards who are deeply committed to place, not just specific issues or constituencies. They motivate others who must ultimately own the revolution if it is to succeed.
The book offers practical advice and specific examples of how to reconcile competing interests in regions todayfundamental tensions that are deeply rooted in the history of our republic and must be addressed anew by each generation of Americans. Written by ARS co-founders Doug Henton, John Melville and Kim Walesh, Civic Revolutionaries will appeal to leaders in business, government, education, and communities. Scheduled for release in October by Jossey-Bass/Wiley, the book will be featured at the upcoming National Stewardship Forum in Boston, where attendees will have an opportunity to visit with the authors and participate in a discussion of the book, as well as receive a free copy. Copies of Civic Revolutionaries may be ordered now through www.josseybass.com.
