Four Key Drivers of Prosperity in America's Metropolitan Areas
To achieve economic prosperity that is broadly shared and environmentally sustainable, our nation must leverage the key assets?innovation, human capital, infrastructure, and quality places?that principally concentrate in our major metropolitan areas. Hear how a diverse network of civic, business and government leaders are organizing to craft an integrated policy agenda and make suggestions for specific federal reforms that give cities, suburbs, and metro areas.
Presenter: Bruce Katz, Director, The Metropolitan Policy Program, Blueprint for Prosperity, The Brookings Institution
Green Innovation and the Economy: The Climate Prosperity Project
The Climate Prosperity Project is a new economic development partnership focused on promoting energy independence, preventing climate change, and protecting the environment by advancing the idea that innovation, efficiency, and conservation in the use and reuse of resources is the best way to increase jobs, incomes, productivity, and competitiveness. Learn how government, business and civic groups can partner on initiatives aimed at bettering urban sustainability, and how these initiatives are beginning to drive economic growth.
Presenters: Dr. Marc A. Weiss, Chairman and CEO, Global Urban Development; Richard C.D. Fleming, President and CEO, St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association
Mega-Regions: The New Vehicle for Organizing Sustainable Growth
Over the next 40 years, the US population will increase by nearly half from its 2000 level, 70 percent of which will live in an ever-growing number of "megaregions" across the country. Megaregions ? agglomerations of metropolitan regions linked by labor markets, infrastructure, and land use systems ? are expected to replace metropolitan regions as the new competitive unit in the global economy. Learn about the emergence of megaregions and their application to planning infrastructure and transportation systems, economic development strategies, and energy use and climate impacts.
Presenter: Petra Todorovich, Director, America 2050, Regional Plan Association
